The Queensland Government’s Gambling Community Benefit Fund provided $17,077.50 to the Rotary Club of Thuringowa Central to purchase Shorty, our Wind Dancer, a portable PA system, and a shade structure for use at the Willows Rotary Markets.
The advertising device has been in action since March, and has brought ambience and excitement to the Markets, as well as increased patronage. He stands by the highway every Sunday, beckoning everyone in. A naming competition was held amongst stallholders and his name was decided to be Shorty.
The PA system was purchased from NQAV, and has been in frequent use at the markets since.  An example of its use was during the Global Warming Warriors competition where 6 local primary schools competed to encourage environmentally aware behaviours.
The Shade structure was purchased from Quickshade Australia and has been a commonly used asset for events held at the Markets such as the Global Warming Warriors event. Rotary has recently taken over the management and operation of the Strand Night Markets and the Cotters Markets form the Townsville City Council. The shade structure is now the main entertainment and administration shelter at the Strand Night Markets.
